Karen and Family:
Our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss...our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Your Mom was always so kind to my Mom and she enjoyed her company at Tanti Api's kaffee klatches.

Vielen Dank an euch alle.
In the 1970s I met Lilo Butterfield for the first time. BJ’s, Joana’s and Karen’s Mother already welcomed everybody at their house back then. We, 14-year-old teenage girls, loved spending time at hers, we chatted and laughed much. In 1983 I was able to travel to the US for the first time with a friend. Our goal was to see as much as possible, and Lilo and her family were our anchor. We started there, we were pampered and cooked. No matter what, we always ended up at her house again. That was familiarity and security in a country that was foreign to us. And again we talked and laughed much with her. It wasn’t until 2014 that I was able to come back to visit the US, this time with my own family. We met Lilo for a cup of coffee and again, laughed a lot. We talked about shared memories and recognized what the whole family had in common - their frankness and hospitality. In 2019 it was the last time I went to the US, this time with my own mother of 84 years who knew Lilo as well from her time in Germany. And once again it was like ‘always’ – warm and familiar. Thanks to all of you. Dear Lilo: thank you very much for the wonderful time. Rest in peace.
