Obituary of Harvey Yavener
Please share a memory of Harvey to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Harvey B. "Yav" Yavener, 93, of Williamstown, NJ, passed away on March 7, 2023.
One of the great sports writers of our time, he made you feel like you were sitting in the front row of any sporting event. His passion was intercollegiate athletics and during his time at the Trentonian / Trenton Times, he was honored by the ECAC Sports Information Directors with the Media Award in 1992 for outstanding coverage of intercollegiate athletics in the Eastern United States. In 2003, he became a Rider University Hall of Fame inductee. Harvey enjoyed covering Princeton University.
As much as he loved sports, he loved the smells, tastes, cultures of the world's cuisines. Cooking, writing, and talking about food with his soul mate Pauline Bohus (Aunt Polly) was his favorite thing to do. A close second was Jazz. Harvey met so many of the "Greats": Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis to name a few. He always made you feel like you were sitting in one of the cigar filled Jazz clubs of NYC.
"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself." ~ Abraham Maslow
