Obituary of Michael P. Maurio

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Michael Patrick Maurio, 86, passed away peacefully and quietly at home surrounded by his wife of 59 years Lydia (Chanczewsky), daughters and grandchildren; Maria Maurio (Dan Griffin), Andrea Maurio (Brian Jenkins) and Nina Maurio (Ben Anderson) and grandchildren Gabrielle, Andrew and Hunter Griffin. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Valentina Golya (Mike Weyman), long time neighbors Alice and Joe Ostrowski (and family), many nephews, nieces and relatives in New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Bisignano, Italy. He was predeceased by his parents Francesco and Maria (Turano) Maurio, siblings Angelo (Jean), Dominic (Gladys), Anthony (Ida) Thomas (Lucy) and John, Mary Cammiso (Pat), Dolly Manukas (Alex), Rose Russo (Pete), Lucy Pollaro (Vince), and brother-in-law Elmer Golya. Born on Charles Street in 1936 in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, the youngest of 10 children, Mike or "Mickey" as he was affectionately known, was an accomplished clarinet and saxophone player in his youth. He graduated from Trenton Central High School in 1954. He was a proud Italian-American, devout Catholic, and an avid Giants and Yankees fan. Michael had a dry sense of humor which was inherited by his daughters and an appreciation for jazz, big band, classical music and the arts. He was a smart dresser (no sneakers or jeans), enjoyed his vodka martinis and fine dining, and playing Pinochle especially with his grandsons. His Sundays were always dedicated to listening to Sid Mark's Sundays with (Frank) Sinatra on 1210 AM while preparing homemade pasta and gravy (sauce) for early afternoon family dinners, which he loved to share with his neighbors. He never quite retired and loved working as a commercial realtor since the 1970s starting with Mina L. Smith, Maguire Burke Realty, Joseph Martin Realty, and most recently Richardson Realty. His most favorite place to be was oceanside in Brigantine, NJ lounging on a deck chair surrounded by his family. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He was active in their lives and well known in the Newtown Friends and George School carpool lanes jockeying to be the first car for afternoon pickup and a fixture at all events! The family would like to express gratitude to Father Steve of St. Raphael's for his pastoral care and many home visits. The team at Accent Hospice Care: nurses Deanna and Chee, health aide Natasha and musical therapist Claire who provided exceptional care and support for which the family is profoundly grateful. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Seasons Foundation https://seasonsfoundation.org/donate-today/ The funeral mass will be held on Monday, December 5, 2022, at 10:30am at St. Raphael's Church 3500 South Broad Street Hamilton, NJ 08610.
