Obituary of Mary Horodysky

Mary Horodysky Obituary Mary (Maria) Horodysky , 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Nov. 15, 2017 at Compassionate Care Hospice Hamilton. Mary was born in Yavoriv, Ukraine on May 29, 1924 to Roman and Dominica Lewycky. As teachers, her parents and family were transferred to Krynycia, Lemko Region by the Polish Administrative Government. While in this region, Mary attended a Polish boarding school run by the Ursuline nuns. Throughout her schooling days, Mary was a strong advocate and defender of Ukrainian history, culture and customs. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the family returned to Yavoriv where Mary continued her education, graduating from the State Teacher's College. She met her future husband John Zenon and were married before having to flee their native Ukraine in 1944. They initially lived in Kaufbeuren West Germany, where their son Roman was born in 1946, before moving to Munich. In 1951, the family emigrated to the United States and settled in the Trenton area. Initially Mary worked at the Horseman Doll Factory, and furthered her education by taking bookkeeping courses. She then began her career in the banking industry initially working at Stacy Savings and Loan Assn, and retiring from Roma Bank. Throughout her lifetime, Mary pursued her love of Ukrainian Arts and Culture, and was well known for Ukrainian embroidery, ceramics, pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs). Her home is richly decorated by her handcrafted exponents of the various art forms. Her works have also been on display at several local libraries in the Greater Trenton area. Mary also incorporated the intricate Ukrainian designs into her crocheting of numerous afghans. Mary cherished the time spent with family and friends, especially time with her beloved grandchildren. Mary was a member of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Sisterhood at St. Josaphat's, the Ukrainian National Women's League of American and the Ukrainian Gold Cross. Predeceased by her parents, Roman and Dominica, her sister Lydia and her beloved husband John Zenon, she is survived by her son Roman and his wife Alexandra, and her grandson Andrij and his wife Karen Horodysky, granddaughter Laryssa Horodysky, and extended family in the US, Canada and Ukraine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated –Monday, Nov. 20,2017 -at 10:00 at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church. Internment will be in St. Andrews Cemetary, South Bound Brook,NJ.
